Is Love Blind?

Anyone who has Netflix, so pretty much everyone, may have noticed their new feature of listing their top 10 shows. Ever since this feature started, Love is Blind, has been one of those 10. The series is a typical reality dating show format, as you progressively meet different people involved, and watch their stories and drama play out. The gimmick is that they all date each other by meeting in adjoining rooms, where they can hear, but not see each other. (They were all recruited off social media, so of course they are all attractive at minimum.) To say more would be to say too much – there is a lot of drama and twists, which led to a check to see if the show was secretly scripted (apparently not, from the research we did).

There is an interesting message here, about how much you can learn about who someone is when not focused on looks. Given how much many existing dating sites rely on appearance, this is an intriguing twist. (Although Allison Herman argued on The Ringer that the show still relied on reactions to looks once the couples met in person, we maintain that the couples’ stories all followed what was initially created in those “blind” dates.)

The takeaway here would be getting to know your mate or potential significant other. Yes, you know them, but you may be just as blind to who they are now as a stranger with a blindfold over their eyes. All the things you believe about that person may be based on who they were, but they may have changed and evolved during your relationship. Or your own perception may be distorted by your interactions that influence how you see the person you love. You could be missing key signs of who they are now by stubbornly refusing to see them as their true self.

Take the time to connect with your mate as though you had to learn about who they are from scratch. You might learn something! But whether you do or not, this important person will feel heard and appreciated in a way they may not have felt in a long time.
